Transportation

  • Getting to Lopez

You will travel to Lopez Island on a ferry from the Anacortes, WA  ferry terminal.  Anacortes is 85 miles northwest of Seattle.  The drive from Seattle usually takes a little over 1.5 hours.  The following link is to google map directions from Seattle to the ferry terminal

There are a limited number of sailing times each day.  Please check the sailing schedule from Anacortes to Lopez Island to plan your travel time.  During the summer it is wise to get to the ferry terminal at least  2.5 hours prior to the sailing time you want to make.  This makes for a lot of waiting but the ferry terminal is a pleasant place to hang out.  There are restrooms, food for sale, and a nice beach to play on.  If you miss the ferry you intended to be on you may have to wait a few more hours for the next boat.  Get there early!

Plan to be driving out of Seattle at least 4 hours prior to the sailing time you want to make.  The ferry ride is about 45 minutes.  It takes about 20 minutes to get to the Affolter's house on the island.

It takes about 20 minutes to drive from the ferry terminal to the house.  Please take the speed limit seriously.  The police give out lots of speeding tickets, especially on busy summer weekends.

CARPOOLING!!!  There will be limited parking at the Affolter's home so please carpool as much as possible.

  • Alternative Transportation Ideas

    Walking-On the Ferry.

Being a walk-on passenger is a great idea.  You don't have to wait in any lines, and only need to get to the ferry terminal about 30 minutes prior to your intended sailing time.  You can park your car at the Anacortes ferry terminal for a daily fee.  If you choose this option make sure you've arranged for someone to come pick you up from the ferry terminal.

    Biking-On.

Another great option.  You can leave your car at the ferry terminal and bike onto the ferry.  Like walking-on you only need to get to the terminal about 30 minutes prior to your sailing time.  With all the people coming it shouldn't be hard to find a car to put extra bags into.  Give yourself about 1 hour to bike to the Affolter's house from the ferry terminal.

During busy summer weekends there will be lots of people on Lopez.  Many of them will be trying to leave on Sunday.  You should be in the ferry line at the Lopez terminal at least 2 hours prior to your intended sailing time.
